The Eddie Aikau Invitational - Waimea Bay, Hawaii
Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 7:47AM It looks as if today will be the day that "Eddie would go" or "The Eddie" will be taking place in Waimea Bay, Hawaii. This event held in honor on the first official life guard to patrol the Waimea Bay area saving many lives and surfing for hours at a time without taking a break. Eddie Aikau was there during the beginning of the Waimea Bay surfing. Now Quicksilver host this event known as the Eddie Aikau Invitational that only goes off once the Bay starts to pump out clean giant swells.
Yesterday there were 35-40+ waves but were choppy and not safe to hold the event. But today looks as if bigger, cleaner, and "safer" waves will be rolling in. Big name surfers have gone over to Waimea Bay in hopes of the event taking place.
Head over to the Eddie Aikau Invitaional website to get more info on the history, the legend, and catch some live feed of todays event.
Here is a video composed of some young guns talking about the waves and the amazing event taking place in the past.
